Late 10/23. We left Canada and wondered into New York and Lake Champlain. The lake is a large natural lake in the Adirondack Mountains bordering upper New York and Vermont. We loved the little area around the small town of Essex. We stayed at the Essex Inn which honored our reservation even though I had errantly made reservations for the night before. Since we were out of season, we were the only guests. We were sorry to have been there on a day the restaurant was closed, but were referred to the next town and The Willsboro Diner. Upon return to the inn, we walked down to the Barn Door Tavern that served beer and wine and had live music. The hospitality in the whole area was super friendly and we wanted to stay longer.
Ausable Chasm was a side trip that Erik had visited as a child. It was a great place for our hike and well worth the visit. It is privately owned. During the summer, they operate rafts, but Erik remembered riding in big red wooden boats. The canyon was formed millions of years ago by glacial activity gouging the sandstone.
