Early 10/23 Anne of Green Gables takes place on PEI and they make the most of the publicity. This picture reminds me of the books the most. We stayed in Moncton, New Brunswick and then travelled up to the Confederation Bridge to cross over into PEI. The bridge opened in 1997 and at 8 miles, is the longest bridge in Canada. In the winter, it goes over ice covered water. We stopped for a nice lunch in Victoria and then wondered over to Cavendish Dunes trail and Prince Edward Island National Park. We did not explore the west side of the island or Anne of Green Gables sites. We had a nice walk through the area and on the Dunelands trail. By late afternoon, we were looking for a beer. Just beyond the end of the season, this was no easy find and we ended up in a trailer on a golf course. A fine stop it was and we walked on a pier near oyster beds and enjoyed the peace of the golf course. By then, we had driven quite a bit of the eastern coastal area and were near our night's destination of Charlottetown.
We loved Charlottetown. It is the capitol and has the largest part of the population of PEI at around 40,000. It is quite walkable with paths along the water, lots of historic buildings, and good restaurants. There were many scarecrows up for the scarecrow festival. After two nights, we caught the ferry to Nova Scotia to catch yet another ferry to our northern most destination, Newfoundland..
